Despite her poor upbringing, the heroine of Mansfield Park is intelligent, independent, and largely concerned with doing what’s right—your typical Aquarius. These water signs can sometimes be misunderstood as aloof because of their disdain for emotional scenes. Though Fanny knows her feelings for Edmund, she buries them because she doesn’t believe she has a right to them. But behind that shy facade, Aquarius signs are deep thinkers who love helping others.

Catherine Morland, Northanger Abbey, Pisces (February 19 - March 20)

But Pisces’ overly trusting nature can get them into trouble, as does their desire to escape the real world. As Catherine learns from her voracious reading of Gothic novels, not everything in life is as romantic and exciting as fiction.

Like Emma Woodhouse in Emma, Geminis just want what’s best for everyone ... or rather, what they think is best for everyone. It doesn’t matter if their friends would rather use Tinder than Gemini matchmaking services. Twin signs are naturally curious, affectionate, and adaptable. But watch out, because these air signs are prone to making impulsive decisions and changing their minds often, and therefore are notoriously inconsistent.

Ah, the complex Cancers ... like the unsung, under-appreciated hero of Sense and Sensibility, they are extremely sensitive, emotional, and sympathetic. But it might be difficult for others to tell because Cancers are also prone to negative thinking, jealousy, and suspicion. Of course, in Colonel Brandon’s case, that suspicion was justified—he knew the truth about the cad Willoughby the whole time. In other words, don’t let Cancer instincts go ignored.

Like all fire signs, Leos are driven by their passion. Like Marianne Dashwood, they crave romance, creativity, and a good time. The only downside is that all these high expectations and daydreaming make the cold harsh dose of reality a difficult pill to swallow. Willoughby’s betrayal in Sense and Sensibility nearly destroys Marianne’s tenacious Leo spirit.

Though perhaps not the most beloved of Austen’s characters, the crafty Mary Crawford embodies the traits of a typical Sagittarius. Though Mary comes off as friendly, even helpful towards Fanny’s cause, Sagittarius will do anything to get what they want, and they aren’t afraid of compromising society’s rules, or even their own beliefs, in the process. Though to other signs Sagittarius might seem selfish or immoral, they are true chameleons, able to travel in different cultures and environments without hesitation.

Like their fellow Earth sign Taurus, Capricorns are responsible, with excellent manners and self-control. Unfortunately, their propensity for propriety gets them in trouble, as they can sometimes be perceived as controlling. When Anne calls off her engagement to Captain Wentworth, she believes, at the time, that it’s the best decision. Due to her Capricorn nature, she’d rather live unhappily than admit she was wrong. Fortunately Anne gets another chance to see that she’s made a mistake, and gets out of her own way just in time.
