Despite her poor upbringing, the heroine of Mansfield Park is intelligent, independent, and largely concerned with doing what’s right—your typical Aquarius. These water signs can sometimes be misunderstood as aloof because of their disdain for emotional scenes. Though Fanny knows her feelings for Edmund, she buries them because she doesn’t believe she has a right to them. But behind that shy facade, Aquarius signs are deep thinkers who love helping others.

Catherine Morland, Northanger Abbey, Pisces (February 19 - March 20)

The young heroine of Northanger Abbey, Catherine, is just seventeen when we first meet her. But even at that young age, she embodies the typical traits of a Pisces. Compassionate, curious, artistic, and gentle, this water sign is very friendly and emotional. But Pisces’ overly trusting nature can get them into trouble, as does their desire to escape the real world. As Catherine learns from her voracious reading of Gothic novels, not everything in life is as romantic and exciting as fiction.

Ruled by Mars, the God of War, Aries are determined and will stop at nothing to get what they want. Disdaining the rules of polite society, Lady Susan flirts her way through life, revealing her hot-tempered Aries nature (much to the delight of Austen’s readers) along the way.

Bulls know the very things that make them frustrating to deal with are also what make them fantastic friends and partners. Like Elizabeth Bennet in Pride and Prejudice, unwilling to reconsider her first impressions of the stuffy Mr. Darcy, you might be stubborn, possessive, and reluctant to compromise. But once someone takes the time to get to know you, you’re ultimately reliable, loyal, passionate, and value the best things in life.

Emma Woodhouse, Emma, Gemini (May 21 - June 20)

Like Emma Woodhouse in Emma, Geminis just want what’s best for everyone . . . or rather, what they think is best for everyone. It doesn’t matter if their friends would rather use Tinder than Gemini matchmaking services. Twin signs are naturally curious, affectionate, and adaptable. But watch out, because these air signs are prone to making impulsive decisions and changing their minds often, and therefore are notoriously inconsistent.

Colonel Brandon, Sense and Sensibility, Cancer (June 21 - July 22)

Ah, the complex Cancers . . . like the unsung, under-appreciated hero of Sense and Sensibility, they are extremely sensitive, emotional, and sympathetic. But it might be difficult for others to tell because Cancers are also prone to negative thinking, jealousy, and suspicion. Of course, in Colonel Brandon’s case, that suspicion was justified — he knew the truth about the cad Willoughby the whole time. In other words, don’t let Cancer instincts go ignored.

Marianne Dashwood, Sense and Sensibility, Leo (July 23 - August 22)

Like all fire signs, Leos are driven by their passion. Like Marianne Dashwood, they crave romance, creativity, and a good time. Leos are desperate to be the most important thing in their partner’s life. The only downside is that all these high expectations and daydreaming make the cold harsh dose of reality a difficult pill to swallow. Willoughby’s betrayal in Sense and Sensibility nearly destroys Marianne’s tenacious Leo spirit.

Jane Bennet, Pride and Prejudice, Virgo (August 23 - September 22)

Elizabeth Bennet’s older sister Jane is all that’s good in the world — and so is hardworking and serious Virgo. Virgo’s best traits, like Jane’s, are loyalty, analytical thinking, and practicality. But sometimes those get the best of them, making Virgos play it safe all the time, much to the frustration of their friends. Don’t be afraid to voice what you really want, Virgo! You deserve Mr. Bingley!

Elinor Dashwood, Sense and Sensibility, Libra (September 23 - October 22)

The yin to Marianne’s Leo yang, Elinor Dashwood represents the typical Libra. This air sign is diplomatic to a fault, always weighing the pros and cons of every situation, and values justice and fairness above all else. Unfortunately, Libras are also desperately afraid of confrontation, so when Elinor realizes she’s become attached to Edward Ferrars, she’s too afraid to tell him of her true feelings. Add on to that a healthy dose of self-pity, and Libras’ natural grace can make them a sitting target for loudmouth cads. But fool a Libra once, and you’ll live to regret it. Libras can carry a grudge forever.

Captain Wentworth, Persuasion, Scorpio (October 23 - November 21)

Whatever you do, do not mess with a Scorpio. With their courage and loyalty, you want Scorpios like Captain Wentworth of Persuasion on your side. When Anne Elliot made the mistake of calling off their engagement, she made an enemy of her former lover. But Scorpios are complex. While they can be secretive and jealous—going out of their way as Wentworth does to test Anne once they are reacquainted–Scorpios are also determined to get to the truth of the matter, making them reliable, moral, and deeply admirable.

Mary Crawford, Mansfield Park, Sagittarius (November 22 - December 21)

Though perhaps not the most beloved of Austen’s characters, the crafty Mary Crawford embodies the traits of a typical Sagittarius. Though Mary comes off as friendly, even helpful towards Fanny’s cause, Sagittarius will do anything to get what they want, and they aren’t afraid of compromising society’s rules, or even their own beliefs, in the process. Though to other signs Sagittarius might seem selfish or immoral, they are true chameleons, able to travel in different cultures and environments without hesitation.

Anne Elliot, Persuasion, Capricorn (December 22 - January 19)

Like their fellow Earth sign Taurus, Capricorns are responsible, with excellent manners and self-control. Unfortunately, their propensity for propriety gets them in trouble, as they can sometimes be perceived as controlling. When Anne calls off her engagement to Captain Wentworth, she believes, at the time, that it’s the best decision. Due to her Capricorn nature, she’d rather live unhappily than admit she was wrong. Fortunately Anne gets another chance to see that she’s made a mistake, and gets out of her own way just in time.
