Dating is hard. Where are you supposed to meet new people in this fast-moving and perennially online world? Before the apps and Love Island, there were matchmakers—experts who would promise to find you your perfect match and a lifetime of happily-ever-afters. Such things still exist to this day but are far less common. Still, they make for great romance story fodder, as evidenced in the new romantic drama, Materialists.

Written and directed by Celine Song, Materialists tells the story of Lucy (played by Dakota Johnson), a former actress who now works as a matchmaker for the elites of New York City. Her clients want impossibly perfect partners who are uber-rich, handsome, and without flaws, which Lucy can relate to since marrying a wealthy man can solve a lot of problems. She seems to have met her ideal other half in the form of Harry (Pedro Pascal), a handsome financier with a highly sensible outlook on romance. But then there's John (Chris Evans), her old flame who is kind and loving but also broke. In the modern world of debt, sexism, and societal pressure, can simple and uncomplicated love really solve all of our problems?

Here are eight books with matchmakers that will entice fans of Materialists.

Mr. Knightley, however, thinks it’s all a bad idea. Surely, in her youthful wisdom and drive, Emma can be successful in her endeavors?
