True love and passionate romance can be found and celebrated in any setting. However, there’s just something special about budding romances and connections built with the backdrop complete with small-town country charm and plenty of beautiful scenery. 

These country romance movies, ranging from hilarious rom-coms to emotional and heartbreaking dramas, embrace their charming settings and the sense of home provided by a tight-knit country community.

Something to Talk About (1995)

Grace King Bichon (Julia Roberts) works for her father’s (Robert Duvall) horse jockey company and is happily married to her husband Eddie (Dennis Quaid). When Grace catches Eddie cheating on her, she is devastated and goes to her father for support, but he only cares about the upcoming horse jockey competition. 

As she tries to decide how to move forward, Grace uncovers secrets from her family’s past and faces her own secrets that she has kept hidden. Grace must decide what the life she really wants looks like… and if it includes Eddie. 

Hope Floats (1998)

When it is publicly revealed that her husband is having an affair with her best friend, Birdee Pruitt (Sandra Bullock) decides to leave Chicago and move with her young daughter, Bernice (Mae Whitman) back to her parent’s house in Smithville, Texas, a town where she had been a beauty queen and queen bee of her high school. 

While struggling with the demands of being a working mother, handling her rebellious daughter, and rebuilding her relationship with her parents, Birdee connects with her old high school classmate Justin (Harry Connick Jr.). As the attraction and relationship grows between her and Justin, Birdee must allow herself to move forward and fully embrace the man and the town into her heart and life. 

Sweet Home Alabama (2002)

Fashion designer Melanie Carmichael (Reese Witherspoon) has made a successful new life for herself in New York City. When Andrew (Patrick Dempsey), her charming big city boyfriend, proposes, everything seems to be falling into place. There’s just one loose end she needs to tie up. 

Melanie must travel back home to Pigeon Creek, Alabama to obtain a divorce from her estranged husband, and childhood sweetheart, Jake (Josh Lucas). Once she’s back in Alabama, facing her past head on, Melanie discovers the true meaning of home and must decide what her future holds. 

All the Real Girls (2003)

Paul (Paul Schneider) is a womanizer who has slept with almost every girl in his small Southern town, where he works fixing cars for his uncle. But when his best friend Tip’s (Shea Whigham) little sister Noel (Zooey Deschanel) returns from boarding school, Paul’s outlook is changed. 

Against Tip’s wishes, Paul and Noel begin a charged romance. Noel’s innocence and inexperience are in sharp contrast to the life that Paul has lived. Even as they begin to form a deeper connection, many forces, including Tip’s anger at the idea of them being together, threaten their relationship and test their feelings. 

The Notebook (2004)

The classic country romance movie! In 1940, young lumber yard worker Noah Calhoun (Ryan Gosling) sparks up a relationship with beautiful heiress Allie Hamilton (Rachel McAdams) who is visiting his small town of Seabrook Island, South Carolina. 

This begins the epic and tragic decades-long love story of two people from different worlds. As they are pulled apart by their statuses, the destruction of war, distance, and other challenges, Noah and Allie never forget each other or the love they shared. 

Elizabethtown (2005)

Drew Baylor (Orlando Bloom) is a young shoe designer having the worst day: He has been fired from his company, his girlfriend dumped him, and now his sister is calling to tell him his father has died while on a visit to family in Kentucky. 

Drew volunteers to retrieve his father’s remains from Kentucky. On the plane, he meets thoughtful flight attendant Claire (Kirsten Dunst). In Kentucky, Drew reaches out to Claire and through various outings around the state, she helps him to grieve and learn the meaning of love and family and to find what’s truly important to him. 

The Last Song (2010)

Teenager Ronnie Miller (Miley Cyrus) has developed a rebellious streak and given up her lifelong passion for piano after her parents’ divorce. Ronnie and her brother are sent to stay with their father (Greg Kinnear) in Georgia for the summer. 

While protecting a sea turtle nest, Ronnie meets Will Blakelee (Liam Hemsworth), a charming local aquarium volunteer. Will brings Ronnie into his life and tells her about tragedy in his past. They form a romantic bond on the island, until more tragedy and past decisions strain their new connection.

Safe Haven (2013)

Katie Feldman (Julianne Hough) is fleeing the dark secrets and trauma of her past life. After bleaching and cutting her hair and choosing a fake identity, she finds herself in the small town of Southport, North Carolina. 

In Southport, Katie becomes friends with her neighbor Jo (Cobie Smulders) and begins a relationship with Alex (Josh Duhamel), the owner of the local convenience store. As Katie develops a deeper relationship with Alex and bonds with his two children, and finding her place in Southport, her past ferociously and dangerously catches up with her. 

Forever My Girl (2018)

A successful country music star, Liam (Alex Roe) has burned all of the bridges connecting him to his hometown of St. Augustine, Louisiana. But when his childhood best friend dies, he returns to the town for the funeral. 

In St. Augustine, Liam reconnects with Josie (Jessica Rothe), a woman he left at the altar eight years earlier. He learns that Josie has a young daughter, Billy, and that he is the father. As Liam and Billy develop a father-daughter bond, Liam faces regret about the way he left and abandoned St. Augustine and the people he loved there.

The Lost Husband (2020)

After the death of her husband, Libby (Leslie Bibb) moves with her two children to her aunt Jean’s (Nora Dunn) farm in central Texas. Jean assigns James (Josh Duhamel again!), her farm manager, with teaching Libby how to work the farm, as she has no experience and is in need of a job. 

As they get closer and James becomes a bigger part of the lives of Libby and her children, Libby undergoes the challenges of parenting and discovers secrets about her upbringing. James and Libby must each learn to move on from their pasts in order to find their future.
